The Origins of Veterans Day

What began as Armistice Day in 1919 to commemorate the end of World War I has evolved into a broader celebration of all American veterans. The historic signing of the armistice occurred at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918, marking the end of "The Great War". In 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower officially changed the name to Veterans Day, expanding its purpose to honor all veterans who have served our nation.

A Day of National Recognition

Today's observance carries special meaning as we mark the 105th year of this important tradition. Across the nation, communities are coming together to honor veterans through various ceremonies and events. In our own Dallas community, the Greater Dallas Veterans Day Parade is taking place at Fair Park, featuring military vehicles, equipment displays, and a special ceremony commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the All Volunteer Force.
